Carroll H Weiss Carroll H Weiss

The following is an inventory of information about Dalmatian urinary stone disease, updated as of summer 2004 kindly provided by Carroll H. Weiss Former Director (1991-2002) DCA Study Group on Urinary Stones carroll.weiss9629@att.net

Three online files (numbered 1-3 below) of fundamental information about Dalmatian urinary stone disease are now available at the following page links.

The compendium of articles offer more about the breed-specific Dalmatian urinary stone disease than is probably known by general practice vets. That said, please print one set of the articles for your vet and for yourself and authenticate their scientific merit by explaining they evolve from vet teaching programs of Dr. Carl Osborne's world-famous "Minnesota Stone Center" of the University of Minnesota Vet Medicine Center.

If your afflicted Dalmatian is a puppy or if you're a breeder, the puppy article (no. 3) may have special information for you.

Because of the expense of the only commercially-available anti-urate food formulation, (Hill's u/dR), a lengthy article on home-cooked formulations for URATE-stone forming Dalmatians is included in no.1.

No. 1. Urinary Stone Forming By Dalmatians: A Compendium of Scientific Information by Carroll Weiss

No. 2. 2003 Purine Table A listing of over 200 foods. Tabs at bottom of your computer monitor screen shift between one tabulation alphabetized by food, the other by purine content. (Thanks to Sarah Morgan from the U.S. now residing in Ireland where she shows her Dalmatians in conformation and in performance events.)

No. 3. Urinary Stone Forming by Puppies (including anti-urate food formulations suggested by Dr. Joseph Bartges).

There is a reported error of 85% on the part of local provincial labs assaying urinary crystals/stones. For info on sending urine specimens of abnormal crystals or abnormal stones to a world-famous center specializing in canine urinary stones, go to the homepage of the Minnesota Stone Center
