Hi All,
I have been reading this forum for a couple of months now and have gained a lot of information from it, so thank you all that post both good and bad experiences. I have also been to meet people with dalmatians, so have an idea how they behave in a family environment. We are now looking for a dalmatian and are thinking about a younger welfare dog or a puppy. Any advice would be welcome ie pros and con's regarding a welfare dog or a puppy. We live in north worcestershire so if anyones around that area and can help, that would be great.

I think this is so much a question of personal choice. With a puppy you have all the joy of a little bundle but all the work of training until eventually you get a well socialised happy adult dalmatian.

Welfare dogs run the whole gamut in terms of size, age and temperament.

We are moving a young n bitch today who has already been spayed, is very well trained, she will sit before she crosses the road or needs to have her collar and lead put on. She never goes up stairs or gets on the furniture. All she will need is reinforcement of this good behaviour.

Others are pretty unruly and need an experienced dalmatian owner before they become pleaurable companions.

You could foster to see how a dalmatian fits your lifestyle. We home check fosterers in the same way as adopters. At the moment we have a nice natured 9 year old whose owner can no longer walk him due to ill health. Of course we want a permanent home for him but meanwhile he needs looking after. The bonus with a foster dog is that it is a bit like "sale or return" if you like it you can keep it!

Thank you for your reply and your advice given.

As you say, some dalmatians need an experienced owner, of which were not. But we are prepared to put a lot of time and effort in, which we know is required.

We will keep an open mind as to having a puppy or a welfare dalmatian.

Good luck with your decision. I'm sure you will be happy with whatever you decide.
Dalmatians are wonderful companions as long as you put in the work with a puppy and have the time to devote. An adult may need new rules to suit your family, but persistence and patience will yield results, just maybe take a little longer.
