Is it essential to take a bitches temperature daily, at least once a day, the week before she is due to whelp? Bailey has a serious thing about thermometer and runs, well waddles away fast, and will not allow you to take her temperature? She is like this at the vets as well and will open the door and leg it is she sees a thermometer. I do not want to stress her and wondered if I can get away without this?

I never took bitches' temperatures before whelping; they managed fine!

I never take mine either - but it does help to know when it might start. At the chemists you can buy temperature strips ( plastic looking things which you lay on their tummy) which could do the trick. They are usually used for babies but i think would be fine for a doggy tum.

Thank you: I actually have some strips in the medicine cupboard so brill idea Maggie. I did actually wonder about buying a non-contact thermometer but knew there had to either be an easier way, or Mother Nature way, so again thanks. I cannot go with the "will shred paper for nesting" as Bailey has always shred paper when she gets the chance Smile

Could you manage to take it while she's asleep?

Nah, as soon as I walk near her she is up like a shot, and legs it out of the room, she moves faster when she thinks I am up to something than at any other time, bless her Smile

I check Chelsea's temp daily. Not that she is bothered but I do it when she is distracted, like eating her tea.
As she's due next Friday/Saturday I will be doing Chelsea's twice daily temperature checks from Wednesday onwards.
It's not essential if Bailey doesn't let you but it helps give an indication of when you need to set up camp next to the whelping box!

Lisa.

You mustn't laugh at us Lisa - me and Spotalot will be sitting up all night counting virtual contractions and waiting for the first pups to arrive. Laughing

I know when I was looking for Daisy nearly all the litters were in the Midlands or the North.
Seems to be the same now. I had a 5 hour journey.
She was worth it Laughing

Well Sandie's arrived yesterday as you will have seen, Chelsea is due next Friday/Saturday and the pups I don't think have dropped yet so I doubt she will be early. Although I've actually started checking her temps twice daily already just to prepare myself!
