I would like some general advice please, regarding the purchase and ownership of a dalmatian. After (well many years really) we have decided to get another dog, having had a dog while overseas several years ago.

What is the procedure for getting a puppy ?

We are only interested in a dog as a pet, not for showing at all, although it would seem sensible to get the best one possible (up to a point !!) In other words, black spots, no patches. No blue eyes etc.

I've seen on various web siters, links to puppies available. Is this the best route or what is ? What is the time scale, from initial enquiry until purchase ?

We used to know somebody locally who has dalmatians but he moved away. We don't really want to just stop somebody in the street with a "spotty" and ask their advice.

Any advice you could give would be most welcome. Are there any shows locally for dalmatians. It seems all the owners are down south.

thanks !

Brian

Hi Brian
If you look under the Ownership link at the top of the page there are lots of answers to your questions. There is also a puppy list containing names of Club Members who have or will have puppies available for suitable homes.

Hiya
If your thinking of getting a puppy why not consider a rescue dal ?
There are soooo many fantastic dallies looking for new homes through no fault of thier own, both young and old.
If you go onto the welfare section and e-mail the co-ordinator they can get a local rep to contact you. Even if you just want info on local breeders they will also be able to help too.
They are also likely to be or know of local dog owners who you might want to chat too. Smile
Hope this helped a little

Hello Brian

You are obviously doing the right thing before buying a dog and finding out as much as you can about the breed. If you look at the list of District Representatives on this site and find the person nearest to you, they can give you lots of good advice and maybe let you see their Dalmatians.
The most important thing is to get a reputable breeder who is careful how the puppy is bred and reared. Also ask about the BAER hearing test to make sure the Dalmatian has been properly tested for hearing, as deafness is a possibility in this breed. Find out as much as you can about owning a Dalmatian, they can be a handful and are very enthusiastic - not everyone can give them what they need in life.
Good luck.
